Thank you very much!
What a lonely guy. All alone with this abundant green gras.
And I learned something new: red letter!

When I saw the hydrant on Carl Weese's site I had to post this:~)

:-) - because of the nature of the alphabet I visit your blog first - and then Carl's ... in fact "Working Picture" is the second to last one in my feedreader - the last one is a Russian blog with its title in Cyrillic.

James, have you seen the wonderful hydrant books Martina has done? I just saw them last week. Was surprised that Carl also posted a hydrant. They are compelling. Perhaps it's because they are red. Well done!

We are an inbred little group here. Martina is the groups leading hydrantologist. Carl and I can only follow. Carl is the weed king with me a close second. We share graffiti and Markus adds some European graffiti? It's great fun and you are more then welcome to add to it.

Give credit where credit is due: Carl was definitely my source of inspiration regarding hydrants. I remember having a conversation with Carl about why the US hydrants are much more diverse in color and form than the German hydrants.
A German hyrantologist's life is hard. Therefore.

I should not whine, I found this gem some weeks ago:

What a find!! I love the football shaped head. Is it legal?

Martina said...

Yes. There are some of them at the football (i.e. soccer) arena. Mainz is famous for three things: Johannes Gutenberg, the Carnival and the football team playing in Germany's Premier League.

I attended Middlebury College, in Vermont. The college is known for it's language schools in the summer. A good friend taught German at their sattelite campus in Mainz. He went on about your town. He loved it there.

Not once did he mention the hydrants:-)

Your friend still there? He may ask Dr. Nordblom if the pw worked. And now it's getting spooky ...

Sadly, Kim Sparks, the man I mentioned, died a few years ago after a wonderful life, with a raft of friends and a lovely wife and interesting children.

:-(

and :-) regarding what you said about his life.

See here (it's a pdf but small): http://www.uni-mainz.de/downloads/MiddleburyMainzHistDocuments0001.pdf

So I work at a place that has a long term partnership with the college that you attended. Nice.
